Grief and Loss

Scripture Passages to Soothe the Heart and Soul

Nothing in life can prepare us for the death of a loved one. Whether death comes suddenly or after a long illness, it is always difficult. Because death is so deeply personal and so final, nothing can emotionally prepare us for its arrival. With every death, there is a loss. And with every loss, there is grief. God's Words are a healing balm to a heart that has been shattered by grief. Listed below are some Scripture passages that can bring comfort, strength, counsel, and peace to a grieving heart.

Instructions: Go to a quiet place. Read the passage slowly. Read it again, and then let the words penetrate your heart. Talk to Jesus about what this passage means to you and listen for His response.  Open your heart to receive whatever grace and consolation God wants to give you.

I command you: be strong and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD, your God, is with you wherever you go.

(Joshua 1:9)

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

(Matthew 11:28-30)

The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, A stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you; you never forsake those who seek you, LORD.

(Psalms 9:9)

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed.

(Psalms 34:19)

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where [I] am going you know the way.”

(John 14:1-4)

“Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them [as their God]. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, [for] the old order has passed away.”

(Revelation 21:3-4)
