Why is this being done at this time in the Archdiocese of Detroit?

In the Archdiocese of Detroit, we first approached this process of moving civil law ownership from corporate sole to parish incorporation in 2007. For a variety of reasons, that process was suspended in favor of other priorities. In 2018, after consideration by the Archdiocesan Finance Council and College of Consultors, it was deemed the right time to restart the initiative.

As a first step in the incorporation process, in 2018 the Archdiocese began transferring parish and other Church – affiliated real estate to Mooney Real Estate Holdings (MREH). The majority of properties were successfully titled under MREH by the end of 2018. The next step in this process involves creating the parish corporations. The first three parishes were incorporated in 2019, namely Our Lady of the Albanians, Divine Providence, and Church of the Transfiguration, all in Southfield. The remaining parishes will be incorporated in May and June 2021.
