Asbestos coordinators and custodial help must attend annual refresher courses. The USEPA Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requires schools to identify and manage asbestos containing materials in their buildings. A key component in effective asbestos management is training. AHERA and OSHA regulations require at least two hours of initial asbestos awareness training with refresher training each year thereafter. This rule applies to maintenance, custodial staff, and cleaning companies who may work in a building that contains asbestos building materials. This Awareness Training class will meet the requirements for both the initial training and refresher training.
All custodial staff must attend one 2-hour Awareness Training class each year. Compliance is essential; the EPA can levy extremely large fines for non-compliance with inspections and training. Some have compared these fines as the sort that could close an institution.
Each school must also have at least one person trained as the Designated Person for their school. If you do not already have a Designated Person, you must have someone take the 5-hour course this year which includes the 2-hour annual training session. AKT Peerless is offering these training courses via Zoom.
Zoom links with instructions will be sent by end of day, June 27th.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Jenn Gelletly at (248) 615-1333.

Dr. Bluestein will send more details soon.
